The history of short-sleeved kimonos
Traditionally, kimonos originated in Japan, and the length of the sleeve was determined by the wearer’s marital status and ceremonial occasion. Married women would wear kimonos with shorter sleeves, whereas young, unmarried women would don long, swinging sleeves.
And, while it’s good to know the origins of this style, short-sleeved kimonos are now donned by women of all marital statuses and ages.
